Privacy Policy
Effective date: July 14, 2026
Overview
This Privacy Policy explains what information InCharacter ("we", "us", "our") collects when you use the InCharacter app, how we use it, and the choices you have. InCharacter is built to need as little of your personal information as possible — there's no sign-up, no email address, and no real-name account.
Information we collect
Device identifier. The first time you open the App, we generate a random identifier and store it on your device. It is not tied to your name, email, or any other real-world identity — it exists purely so the App can recognize "this device" across sessions (for example, to check your subscription status or attribute a story you published).
Usage analytics. We use PostHog, a product analytics service, to understand how the App is used — things like which screens are opened, which features are used, and app performance. This data is linked to your device identifier, not your real identity.
Advertising identifier & attribution (opt-in). On iOS, the App will ask for your permission via Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt before accessing your device's advertising identifier (IDFA). If you decline, we do not access it. If you allow tracking, we use the identifier to measure which ad campaigns led to app installs, so we know whether our advertising is working — we do not use it to build an advertising profile of you elsewhere.
Chat messages. When you chat with a character or play a story, your messages are sent to our servers, which forward them to Google's Gemini API strictly to generate the character's or story's response. We do not store your chat conversations on our servers — your chat history is kept on your device only. Google processes the message content solely to return a response and per its own API terms.
Community stories you publish. If you create and publish a story for other users to play, that story's content (title, premise, opening scene, and related fields) is stored on our servers, tagged with your device identifier so it can be attributed to you and, if needed, removed. Published stories are public — anyone using the App can read and play them.
Purchases. Subscriptions and in-app purchases are handled by Apple or Google, and receipt/purchase data is also shared with RevenueCat, our subscription-management provider, so we can verify your entitlement. We do not see or store your payment card details — those are handled entirely by Apple/Google.
Reports. If you report a piece of community content, we collect the report (what was reported and why) to review it and take action if needed.
How we use this information
- To operate core features — generating chat/story responses, tracking your daily free-message allowance, and checking subscription status.
- To understand product usage and improve the App (analytics).
- To measure the effectiveness of our advertising (only if you've consented to tracking).
- To moderate community content and enforce our Terms of Service.
Data retention & storage
Your chat history is stored locally on your device and is not retained on our servers. Community stories you publish are stored on our servers for as long as they remain live (or until removed for a policy violation, or you ask us to remove them). Deleting the App removes all locally-stored data, including your device identifier and on-device chat history.
Who we share data with
We share data only with the service providers that make the App work, and never sell your personal information:
- Google (Gemini API) — processes chat messages to generate responses.
- PostHog — receives usage analytics tied to your device identifier.
- RevenueCat, Apple, and Google — handle purchases, subscriptions, and receipt validation.
We do not sell your personal data to third parties.
Your choices
- You can decline the App Tracking Transparency prompt on iOS to prevent advertising-identifier access entirely.
- You can delete the App at any time to remove all locally-stored data.
- You can ask us to delete a community story you published, or your associated data, by contacting support@incharacter.app.
Children's privacy
InCharacter is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has used the App and provided us information, contact us and we'll take appropriate action.
Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect the information we handle. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we can't guarantee absolute security.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we'll update the effective date above.
